Some people just think differently than the rest of the crowd. They see things in a different light. This isn’t necessarily a glass half full type of thinking, but an understanding of how the world works.
They understand that creativity follows commitment, so they have faith that they can start something without knowing how to finish it, and their creativity will kick in and give them the answers.
They understand that they need to stay positive in order for positive things to happen to them. The world is very much a “get what you give” system. Some call it karma, some call it the flow, but whatever you call it this is how things work. The key is to always try and give more than you get, and you will actually be given more than you give!
These people understand that there is no such thing as impossible. These are the people that constantly prove the world wrong. Impossible is really just a word for things that haven’t been done yet. Electricity was once impossible. Flight was once impossible. The toaster was once impossible. The TV, automatic rifle, calculator, computer, refrigerator, train, printer and duct tape were all once impossible. Humans have a crazy way of finding solutions to problems when we put our minds to work, and that’s how successful people operate.
Nobody is born knowing any of this information, or any information at all! We are born babies who throw our own poop. We develop our beliefs based on the world around us and who we associate with. This is where the saying “your network equals your net worth” comes from. If you grew up in the middle class or lower, the people around you probably instilled their beliefs onto you. The problem is that they aren’t successful beliefs, because they aren’t coming from people who have made it big. We are the product of our thinking, and most people just don’t think big enough.
The sad truth is that most people put limits on their own potential based on what they see other people around them doing. The thing that everyone needs to realize is that everybody is capable of extreme greatness, but we are all busy comparing ourselves to others, and the vast majority of people don’t want to put in the work to be great. So what we end up with is a society that has made it completely acceptable to limit our potential and only achieve a fraction of what we are capable of.
There is, however, a light at the end of the tunnel! As Dan Pena says, success leaves clues. There are plenty of people who have developed a winning mindset, and chose to think bigger than anybody around them. They decided that they would be different, and they fully committed to maxing out their potential! This can be extremely difficult if you don’t change the people around you, because you need your team to be on the same page. Think of your network as your team, and you can only win if everybody is working towards the same goals. If one player is starting to drag down the team, you either cut or trade them and pick up a new player. You can’t afford to associate with people that will drag you down, as hard as it may be to give up a relationship.
So what do you do if you’ve gotten a glimpse of the light, but don’t know how to get to it?
You start learning. You find a mentor, or two, or three. You read books, watch videos on YouTube, go to live seminars, buy online courses, whatever you can do to learn new things. The real world isn’t as cut and dry as going to school. You don’t have to just learn from a textbook and go to a classroom. There are no tests at the end of each chapter. It’s on you to take the time to learn and get better, and in most cases you will have to MAKE time to study and give something up (TV shows, video games, binging on YouTube, looking at memes for 5 hours a day).
I would suggest doing all of the above, and going straight for the kill! You have to first break through all of the incorrect thinking and bad habits before you can really start to build your successful mindset. This involved hours and hours of beating this new material into your head, which can be draining at times. The key is to do it even when you’ve hit a wall, because when you do you’ll see that the wall is paper thin, and you will always find new motivation to keep going.
You will then start to see these new thoughts play out in the real world, and you will experience results from your new level of thinking. This is really when your new thinking will solidify! And this is the most exciting and motivating part of the learning process.
Here’s the fun part, the learning process will never end. It can’t. You are now on a path to fulfill your potential, not just achieve what other people think SHOULD be possible. And by the way, your potential is unlimited! We have no limits, except for the ones we set on ourselves.
Grand Cardone, my favorite mentor, says this “You can’t do everything, but you can do ANYTHING.”
Success starts in your mind and in the way you think. Your thoughts lead to actions, and actions lead to results. If you can change the way you think, the rest will have a snowball effect and you will change your life!
Go Big,
Jake
