How To Set Goals

We are all conditioned to set goals incorrectly!!

Most everyone has heard of or used the goal-setting formula of SMART…Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely. Because of this, the reality is that most people never achieve their goals. A study actually showed that only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year’s Resolution goal, which should be enough for you to realize that we’ve all been doing this wrong!

Let’s start by asking “What is a goal designed to do?” A goal is defined as: The object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.

Read that definition 5 more times, or until you realize what this concept is actually designed to do. We are trying to choose a “desired result” and then calculate how much “effort” will be required to achieve that result. The problem is that most of us think our desired result is not achievable or unrealistic, especially within a specific time frame. This is where the SMART formula hurts us.

The SMART goal formula tells us to create goals that we THINK are achievable and realistic, but the problem is that we are basing these now off of our belief system rather than what is ACTUALLY POSSIBLE. If you’ve never made $200,000 a year, and you’ve been making $50,000 a year for 5 years now, are you going to think this jump is possible? Probably not. You might think $80,000 a year is possible though…

This is what leads us down the path of setting small goals, which leads us to put in small effort, which leads to small results.

So what’s the solution?

BIG goals! I’m talking massive goals! Like, not just a goal that pushes your thinking a lot, I’m talking aiming for Neptune here! You’re trying to expand your reality so you can open yourself up to what is truly possible for you to achieve.

Also, you should never achieve your goals. This may seem like a strange concept, but I say this because your goals should be so massive that there could actually be no way they are attainable. Because remember, the point of a goal is to give you a road map to your final destination so you can calculate the amount of effort necessary to achieve it. Just so you know, you are capable of FAR MORE than you’ve been led to believe up until this point!

How To Set A Goal:

Whatever your goal is, you need to start at a point that you think would push you a bit, but you could still achieve. If we’re talking money and you’re making $50,000 per year, start at $70,000.

Then take that $70,000 goal and multiply it by 10X, so your goal is now $700,000 per year.

If you’re 200 lbs and you want to lose 20 lbs, obviously you can’t 10X that, but you could double it.

If your goal is to get promoted to a management position, instead start learning the skills that would be needed for 2 or 3 positions above that role, maybe Director or Vice President of a department.

Are you getting this?

We are setting these bigger goals to push ourselves to put in extra effort! We can also accomplish more if we are setting our sights on a bigger, long-term than we can if we are always achieving and recreating small goals with very little payoff. You want your goals to be so massive and the payoff so big that it was actually worth the effort that had to put in!

My Current Goals:

  • I want to have a net worth of over $10,444,000,000 in the next 15 years
  • I want to help 2 billion people become more successful in their life in some form or fashion
  • I want to own 10,444+ apartment units that cash flow over $10,000,000 per month
  • I want earn over $5,444,000 per month from my businesses
  • I want to be the world’s most respected success trainer

Can you see what I’m striving for here? I may never achieve any of these goals, but man would it be sweet if I took them all down! And that’s the point. I want any goal I set to be completely life changing. And if I only achieve 25% of these goals in my lifetime, you can do the math and see that I’ll still be MUCH better off that if I achieved 120% of small goals that I thought I could achieve, like maybe $10,000,000 and $50,000 per month.

You get it?

I hope this helps you set up your life so that in 30 years, we’re all on an exclusive island somewhere having a mastermind session and discussing how we are all changing the world!

Go Big,

Jake
