To Question, Or Not To Question? That Is The Question…

Have you ever wondered why things are the way they are? Some rules exist? Why humans do things a certain way?

I know I’m not alone in this (or am I?). I find myself constantly questioning why my company wants me to use a certain process, why certain rules exists (I’m talking to you, HOA), why stop lights are timed so I get every red light, and so on.

And then I come to my thoughts. Why do I think the way I do? Feel the way I do? Communicate the way I do?

And can I change all of it?

The reality is that we do things the way we do them because that’s how we learned. We learned that certain actions will produce certain results. We learned that we should think about things a certain way. We learned how to communicate.

But from who?

Well considering we are all a product of our environment, we learned first and foremost from our parents and family members. We learned from our friends. We learned from our boss. We learned from TV and movies. We learned from our teachers.

But Jake, is that necessarily a bad thing?

Not at all. What you’ve learned has gotten you to where you are today, kept you alive, hopefully kept you out of prison, and helped you live a good life thus far.

And by all means, if you’re 100% happy where you are now, stop reading this article.

Now if you’re like me, and you know this world has plenty more to offer, and things could be done differently to produce better results, and maybe you don’t agree with certain ideas, you should know that you have the right to do things differently!

Let’s face reality here, everything that was created was done so by people no smarter or better than you. They just assumed the role of authority, or maybe had the best idea at the time, and people followed along.

So what does this mean to me, Jake?

It means that YOU have the exact same ability to create things, change things, have thoughts about things, as anyone else in this universe. You don’t need to continue doing or thinking about things a certain way just because “that’s always how it’s been done.”

You can change anything you want. If something doesn’t work for you, think of how you can change it. If you need to create something, then do it. That’s exactly what the person before you did.

Trust your own ideas, your own thoughts and your own unique way of seeing the world. The world needs more people that are different. Not different like you dress up in dead peoples skin, but different in the sense that there is truly only one of you. You are not a copy of someone else.

So go on and question everything! Question why you eat what you eat, why you go to bed at 10pm, why you watch the news, why you spend 2 hours a day on social media, why you waste hours each day in team meetings.

Then answer those questions with solutions and a better way FOR YOU!

Be Unique,

Jake Martincic
