The hardest part about gaining new customers is getting that initial interest.
The sales process, closing, follow up, that stuff honestly doesn’t require a lot of skill to work at a mediocre level.
But prospecting, cold marketing, trying to find the right customers and spark that initial interest can be incredibly difficult.
So what do most people do when things get difficult?
They run away, quit, move on to something new. But what if they don’t, then what does human nature tell them to do?
If you read the headline, then you already know I’m talking about trickery, manipulation, anything to “cheat the system”.
If you look around in 2022, this behavior is EVERYWHERE in business these days. Here’s some examples…
- Cold calling through a system that assigns a different number every time you call
- Not being honest about a product/program/promo, or withholding information that customer should know
- Using misleading Subject lines just to get you to open an email
I’m sure you’ve been a victim of some of these (or all of them), and it probably didn’t make you feel good.
Ethics Should Matter, Right?
In my opinion, it’s better to have ethics and be transparent than it is to gain a new customer being deceitful.
Let’s face it, if you have to lie to sell your product, you probably shouldn’t be selling it because it sounds like a terrible product!
I know this view isn’t shared, and a lot of business owners are okay with some of these deceptive tactics, but you do need to feel good about what you’re doing everyday, right?
The Better Way Forward
The best thing to do is come up with an honest way to communicate with people that still builds a ton of interest and curiosity, while being completely transparent and providing crazy amounts of value!
If you have to start off slower than Captain Deceptive, so be it. You will far surpass them in the long run because they won’t be able to keep clients, and those clients will move over to you and become YOUR clients.
Remember, a liar always gets caught. Just turn on Law & Order if you need validation of that! 😉
